Update Samsung Galaxy S5 to Android 6.0 Marshmallow with CyanogenMod 13 ROM

Samsung is rolling out the latest firmware updates gradually, means the latest phones will receive the updates first and then older devices such as Galaxy S5, S4 and the Note series may take some time. If you have Galaxy S5 (the supported models are listed below) then you can install Android 6.0 Marshmallow to get the latest Android OS experience. Android M is available via CM 13 sources for these handsets and many developers have ported this ROM to their devices. So if you are interested to install this Android 6.0 Marshmallow based CyanogenMod 13 custom ROM on your Galaxy S5 then go ahead and follow the given step-by-step guide.

Please note that this is a custom ROM which is not officially released by Samsung, thus you’ll need a custom recovery like TWRP already installed in order to flash the ROM and Google Apps package on your Galaxy S5. CM13 Android 6.0 Marshmallow ROM is in its early stages and you might face some minor bugs like force close of phone process or some not functioning features. There are not much modifications or extra added features, just the CM 13 source has been re-compiled. It is expected that these minor bugs will be fixed in further releases. This ROM may not be used as a daily driver yet but keep in touch till further updates. But if you want to try this CM13 ROM then proceed to the installation guide.

How to get Android 6.0 Marshmallow on Samsung Galaxy S5 with CyanogenMod 13 ROM

What’s Working:

Built from CM source, Service, Text, Data, Call, Audio, WiFi, Google Now, Bluetooth and more.

What’s Not Working:

On 1st boot com.android.phone FCs but after that its fine.

Various CyanogenMod features have not been merged yet (Video Recording)

Note:

This guide containing the CM13 custom ROM is working only with Samsung Galaxy S5 codename: kltexx, kltelra, kltetmo, kltecan, klteatt, klteub, klteacg, kltedcm, klte. Individual CDMA builds include kltespr, klteusc, kltevzw and GSM builds as kltedv. Do not try to install this firmware on any other device or incorrect variant.

Pre-Requirements:

  • It is highly recommended to take a proper back up of your important data and settings on the phone using a custom recovery such as CWM or TWRP. In case anything goes wrong then you’ll be able to restore your data.
  • Download and install proper USB Drivers for the Galaxy S5 on PC.
  • Enable USB Debugging Mode on Galaxy S5 from Settings > Developer Options.
  • The latest version of a custom recovery like TWRP should be installed on it.
  • Make sure that the battery level of your Galaxy S5 is at least about 80% before proceeding to the installation guide.

Steps to Install Android 6.0 Marshmallow on Samsung Galaxy S5 with CM13 Custom ROM:

1:- Download the Android 6.0 Marshmallow CM13 (cm-13-20151031-UNOFFICIAL-klte.zip) and Google Apps package (benzo-gapps-M-20151011-signed-chroma-r3.zip) from the above links on your PC (probably on the desktop).

2:- Now, connect your Galaxy S5 to the PC using its USB data cable.

3:- Move the CM13 ROM zipped file to the internal storage of your phone.

4:- Now, disconnect the device from the PC and turn it OFF in order to boot into Recovery Mode.

5:- Turn ON the Galaxy S5 while pressing and holding Volume Down + Power buttons altogether for a while until the device enters into Recovery Mode.

6:- While your device is now in recovery mode, it is recommended to perform a nandroid backup and select all the partitions including System, Data, Boot, Recovery, EFS.

7:- Once the backup is completed, perform a full wipe.

8:- Go back to the main menu of TWRP recovery and tap the wipe button, select Advanced Wipe and after that select Dalvik CacheSystemData, and Cache. Confirm to wipe.

9:- Navigate to the TWRP main menu and tap on the install option. Select the CM13ROM that you have already transferred to the internal memory of your phone and select it.

10:- Proceed to the installation by swiping on the confirmation button.

10:- Repeat the above steps to install Google Apps package on your Galaxy S5.

12:- After the successful installation of ROM and Google Apps, select “Reboot System” in the recovery.

Your Galaxy S5 might take about 4 to 5 minutes to boot for the first time after installation.

Done! You have successfully installed the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow with CyanogenMod 13 custom ROM on Galaxy S5.
