Unlocking the Bootloader on Asus Zenfone 4 2017

The Asus Zenfone, a name well heard among, the android community, for their well-equipped devices at an affordable price. Today we’ll be dealing with the Asus Zenfone 4 and its customization. And the first step in doing so is Unlocking the bootloader on Asus Zenfone 4.

The Zenfone series had started off with entry-level budget phones, targeting a wider audience. The Asus Zenfone 4, the latest iteration of the Zenfone series, has nothing budget-related about it. From a mid-level to flagship standards in specifications and price that not too heavy on the pocket, this device was built to impress, but it did not. With stiff competition from all other brands, the Zenfone4 couldn’t hold its own against the Samsungs and the OnePlus. Given the impressive specs provided, the device could have been well optimized to perform better, but Asus has failed to do so. So rooting the device, or installing custom ROMs, or other applications could benefit the current state of the device. So before rooting or installing custom ROMs we, should start by Unlocking the Bootloader on Asus Zenfone 4.

With a locked bootloader on Android devices, it is virtually impossible to flash a Custom ROM and forced attempts void warranty as well as usually end up in bricks. Therefore, the first step is to always unlock the bootloader. If you want to root, you’d be wanting to flash Custom ROM post-root, and if you want to install a Custom ROM, you’d need to have your stock bootloader unlocked. In simple terms Unlocking the bootloader allows you to install custom Firmware on your Android phone.


  • The process is only meant for the Zenfone 4 ZE554KL (2017). Do not attempt to try it on any other device than the one mentioned here.
  • Unlocking the bootloader will wipe your phone completely, including the apps and internal storage. So do a full backup before starting.
  • Charge your device up to at least 50 percent, before starting the process. Loss of power in between will damage your device.
  • You must enable ‘OEM Unlocking’ option before starting. Go to ‘Settings’ >>‘Developer Options’>> Enable OEM Unlock.

This only requires your basic understanding of a computer and your USB cable to connect your device to the Pc.

Steps to Unlock the Bootloader on Asus Zenfone 4 2017 (ZE554KL)

Step 1: – Download the required files on your Computer

Step 2: – Extract the Zip file to any location easily accessible to you. Now browse to that location and open that folder.

Step 3: – Now press and hold the shift key and then right-click the mouse pointer in that window. Then press Open command window here. A command window will be opened there.

Step 4: – So, boot your Asus Zenfone 4 2017 into Bootloader/Fastboot mode. For that turn off your Phone then hold Power+Volume up to boot into Bootloader/Fastboot mode.

Step 5: – Connect your device to your Pc using a USB cable.

Step 6: – Now to check whether all drivers were correctly installed, type in  “fastboot devices”. It should display a device ID along with the ‘fastboot’ message. If it doesn’t, then make sure that you have the proper device drivers installed.

Step 7: – After making sure of all the steps mentioned above, double-click on the ‘ze554kl_unlock.bat‘ file to unlock the bootloader on Asus Zenfone 4 2017.

Step 8: – If you’re using Mac OS/Linux, then open a Terminal window and type in the following command to unlock.
