OMG! You guys @ XDA rock… My 1st attempt at rooting a phone (galaxy s4 i337) was too easy. I was nervous after reading a lot of the comments but decided to try it. I know everything does not always go as planned but if you follow XDA’s instructions carefully. You will have a rooted a phone in minutes. Thanka so much to xda devs!

my phone is stuck on the at&t symbol
How do you get the towelroot app into the system memory? He is really vague about that step…
Just google towel root apk, download it from your phone. Make sure you go under settings/ security and check box for unknown sources first..
Doesn’t work. I get stuck with this.

i got up to rebooting my phone then tried to “make it ra1n” and it said this phone isnt currently supported. please help
That means you didn’t actually root it.
Worked like a charm.
Worked fine. Had to navigate to the towelroot website and download/install from there because my device was no longer discoverable on my laptop after step 7.
What are the differences between following these steps on a Mac v. a PC?
I didn’t bother downloading the USB drivers since it’s an .exe file, so I need to find those elsewhere.
But after that, are the steps virtually the same?
I really want to drop all the Samsung bloatware and try out the google play edition ROM.
Please help a Mac using noob out. Thanks.
Yes the instructions are the same for mac, no difference.. make sure yoy get those drivers though, otherwise your pc will not recognize your phone.
For drivers try downloading samsung kies they will come with it. OR
Try sammobile website. GL..
If you have a GSM phone (typically AT&T as well as T-Mobile), as well as it is unlocked
(you are not in an agreement), you could go ahead and also
use a local SIM.
i have baseband i337UCUEMK2
Used odin to flash nj1, after that my laptop would no longer see my phone, and my phone wouldnt connect to wifi. finished root using data on my phone, the root worked fine. I just never flashed back to nj4, cant turn my wifi on and my laptop still wont see my phone. whatd i do wrong? what can i do to fix this?
Before I attempt this, I’d like to ask: will this factory reset my phone (I.e. do I have to flash from odin with the factory reset option checked)?
nj4 link not working. cant tell if this works or not… ill check back in a few days hopefully link works then.
link works today, but why when i upload the nc1 stock kernal do i loose wifi? makes it kinda hard for towelroot to do anything cause it says no network connection…….. I rebooted into dwnld mode and used odin 10 to reload nj4 kernal and wifi is back….. I tried again and still looses wifi when i load nc1 kernal…. any help appreciated………
did you ever get this worked out? i’m having the same problem
My samsung At&t met the whole prerequisites, it was runnig 4.2.2 and the tethering feature was blocked off, i tried this whole step and i didnt miss any, until step 6 Now click on “AP” / “PDA” tab in the Odin and locate the firmware I337_NC1_Stock_Kernel file and the phone tried to reboot and failed, it has been writing “System software not authorized by AT&T has been found on your phone. Please turn off your phone and go to the nearest AT&T store for help”
WHAT DO I DO? I NEED HELP URGENTLY GUYS,THIS IS MY 1ST TIME OF TRYING THIS. THANKS

Then back to NJ4 Kernel and everything is ok
after using odin and installing he firmware I337_NC1_Stock_Kernel file the phone rebooted and the wifi is turned off and wont come back on, so when I try to use towelroot and makeitrain it just says “Please ensure you are connected to the internet”. What can I do since my phone wont allow me to put it into wifi now?
You need to flash the NJ4 kernel now.
Follow the instructions carefully to the end. It will all be right when finished..
Hi, Followed your steps above and ended up losing my wifi. Also my phone doesn’t show up on my PC any longer. I’m unable to turn on my wifi. I have kitkat 4.4.4 my baseband ver is I337UCUFNJ5…….I’m afraid I hosed my phone. Suggestions….help! Thanks
I rooted with the above directions and it completely worked. Stupidly, I let a OTA update through and it broke my root. I tried rooting again with these same steps and it no longer works. Any ideas? I’m still on kitkat 4.4.4 Kernel 3.4.0-2960651
also… Baseband versio: I337UCUFNJ5
What about Baseband version: I337UCUFNJ5? Will this method work for my phone?
Worked flawlessly on one of my S4s. The other got stuck in Recovery Boot cycle. A couple other articles suggested the Data Wipe/Factory Reset then clearing the Cash Partition was the only option if this happened. DO NOT do that. Clearly it wipes out your pics, etc… but it DID NOT work. What did work was going back to the Odin folder and launching the oldest version rather than the newest. Presto! Done in a snap just like the first one.
Root Galaxy S4 SGH-I337 AT&T on I337UCUFNJ5 Firmware
This tutorial works for both FNJ4 and FNJ5 with the same files
Whenever I put the NJ4 kernel back on the device, the root is removed. Any idea how to prevent this?
