Install Android 6.0 Marshmallow on Moto E 2014 via CyanogenMod 13 Custom ROM

Android 6.0 Marshmallow update released for the Moto E 2014. Thanks to the popular CyanogenMod team to unleash the first Android 6.0 Marshmallow firmware for the Moto E 2014 device with CyanogenMod 13 custom ROM. As there is no news from the Motorola that when they will release the official Marshmallow firmware for these handsets so its a good news for the Moto E 2014 users that they can now taste the latest Android OS version Marshmallow 6.0. This custom ROM is based on the original AOSP that was recently released by Google.

As this is a custom ROM which is not officially released by Motorola thus you’ll be required to have a custom recovery like TWRP pre-installed on your device in order to flash this ROM and Google Apps .zip files on the phone. Please note that this ROM is currently under alpha stage of development, so you might face some not functioning features or a few bugs but it is expected that a stable version will arrive soon. Note:

This guide containing the Android 6.0 CM13 ROM and instructions can be used only for the Moto E 2014 handsets. Do not try to install this firmware on any other devices or incorrect variant.

Pre-Requirements:

  • Take a proper backup of all your important data and setting on your phone before proceeding to the installation guide.
  • Make sure that you have properly installed the correct Moto E 2014 USB drivers on your PC.
  • The latest version of a TWRP recovery should be already installed on the device.
  • The battery level of your Moto E 2014 should be at least about 70% before going ahead to the instructions.

Steps to Update Moto E to Android 6.0 Marshmallow via CyanogenMod 13 ROM:

1:- First, download the the Android 6.0 Marshmallow CM13 ROM (cm-13-20151023-UNOFFICIAL-condor.zip) and Google Apps package (gapps-600-base-20151022-2-signed.zip) zipped files from the above given links, on the desktop of your PC.

2:- Connect the Moto E 2014 with PC using its USB data cable and transfer the downloaded files to the root folder of internal phone’s storage.

3:- Disconnect the device and turn it off in order to boot into recovery mode (TWRP).

4:- Turn on the phone while pressing and holding Volume Down + Power keys at the same time. Once the TWRP logo appears, you have successfully booted into the recovery.

5:- As your Moto E 2014 is in TWRP recovery, perform a nandroid backup and select the System, Data, Boot, Recovery, EFS options.

6:- Navigate to the main menu of TWRP recovery and tap on the install option. Locate the ROM .zip file that you have already transferred to the internal storage of your phone earlier. Select it.

7:- Proceed with the installation by swiping the confirmation button to install the ROM.

8:- Install Google Apps package on your phone by repeating the above steps.

9:- Once the flashing process is completed successfully, reboot system.
