How to Install TWRP and Root OnePlus 5T Right Now

OnePlus 5, currently the fastest Android device, is not even 6 months old and the company has already launched a better and an improved version of the device, the OnePlus 5T. A lot of OnePlus 5 users are pretty disappointed as the OnePlus 5T is almost the same price as its predecessor but it has a better and a bigger display along with better cameras, both on the front and the rear of the device.

While the OnePlus 5T might soon receive an official update to the latest version of Android Oreo 8.0 based on OxygenOS and OnePlus has already added a lot of interesting additional features to its software, you can always add new features to your device and tweak its overall appearance if you install a custom ROM on your device.

Custom ROMs are Android versions created by developers that are based on the stock version of Android but comes with extra features and customizability options. If you want to install and try out a custom ROM on your OnePlus 5T, then you have to first install a custom recovery called TWRP on your device and then root it to proceed.

Even though the official version of TWRP for the OnePlus 5T is not released yet, an unofficial build of it is already here and combining it with the Magisk module or the SuperSU zip file, you can root your OnePlus 5T right now. Besides installing custom ROMs rooting also has other benefits like the ability to uninstall system apps, blocking ads across system and additional features in apps that support root access.

So, if you have just got the OnePlus 5T and want to root it right away, just follow the below step by step instructions to do so.

How to Install TWRP and Root OnePlus 5T Right Now

Oneplus 5t

Step 1:

First download and install the USB drivers for OnePlus 5T from here.

Step 2:

Now open the settings app on your phone and then go to the About phone option. Now scroll till the last and then tap on the Build number value multiple times until it says that the developer options are unlocked.

Step 3:

Now go back to the main settings app page and then open Developer options and enable USB debugging and the OEM unlocking options.

Step 4:

Before proceeding further, take a complete backup of your device and then store it somewhere safe just to be secure.

Step 5:

Now connect your OnePlus 5T to your PC using the USB cable.

Step 6:

Now download the unofficial build of TWRP recovery for OnePlus 5T from here.

Step 7:

Now download the ADB and fastboot drivers for Windows from here and then install it on your PC.

Step 8:

Transfer the TWRP file to the folder where you have installed the ADB drivers and then open a command window inside that folder by holding shift and right clicking and then selecting open command window here.

Step 9:

Now type the following command in the command window without the quotes “adb reboot bootloader” to reboot your device to the bootloader menu.

Step 10:

Once in the bootloader type the following command to install the TWRP recovery on your OnePlus 5T. “fastboot flash recovery recovery.img”

Step 11:

You can now enter the command “fastboot reboot” to reboot your device. Once the reboot is complete, just switch it off and then hold the power and volume up button together for a few seconds to boot into the TWRP recovery mode.

Step 12:

Once in the recovery mode, Download SuperSu or Magisk and then transfer it to your device using the USB connection.

Step 13:

All you have to do now is to click on the install option on the TWRP recovery home screen and then select the downloaded zip file from the list.

Step 14:

Once you have selected the corresponding zip file, just swipe to install it on your device and reboot your device.
