How to Root OnePlus X and Install TWRP Recovery

Today we’ll be checking out how to root OnePlus X and install custom recovery (TWRP). Rooting is a process that allows you to attain root access to the Android operating system code. It gives you privileges to modify the software code on the device or install other software that the manufacturer wouldn’t normally allow you to.

Only if you root and install a custom recovery, you will be able to install custom ROMs on your device. Even if you wouldn’t want to change ROMs having root privileges can enable to use a variety of apps and procedures including Overclocking, Undervolting and so on. Follow the given steps on how to root OnePlus X and install TWRP on it.

The thing about rooting OnePlus devices is that even if you root your device, you do not lose your warranty, so that’s a win for all those rooting and flashing enthusiasts out there. But please make sure you know what you are doing.If you end up tweaking your phone beyond your knowledge and end up damaging your phone, that will not be covered under the warranty. Proceed to the given steps on how to root OnePlus X and installing TWRP recovery on it.

Pre-Requisites

In order to root your device, you will have to unlock the bootloader on your device first. The complete details on unlocking your bootloader have been provided here.

After Unlocking the bootloader, we should then install a Custom recovery (TWRP), with which we will be able to root the phone in a matter of seconds.

How To Install TWRP on OnePlus X:

Step 1: Download TWRP from here.

Step 2: Enable USB debugging mode on your device. Go to  Settings, choose ‘Developer options’. Find the ‘USB debugging’ option and use this toggle button to enable it.

Step 3: Rename the downloaded file to twrp.img and place it where adb files were installed ie C:/adb

Step 4: Now reboot the phone to Bootloader/Fastboot mode. For that turn off your Phone then hold Power+Volume up to boot into Bootloader/Fastboot mode

Step 5: Now open a command window where you have placed the twrp image file. To do that just press and hold the shift key and then right-click the mouse pointer in that window. Now press Open command window here. A command window will be opened there

Step 6: Now to check whether all drivers were correctly installed. Type in  “fastboot devices”. It should display a text with numbers and letters followed by fastboot.

Step 7: Now to install the twrp type in “fastboot flash recovery twrp.img”.

Step 8: Your Custom Recovery has been successfully installed on your OnePlus X

Step 9: You can manually boot into recovery by unplugging the USB cable and then pressing POWER + VOL down until the device boots. When the Oneplus logo shows up, release the POWER and keep holding down VOL DOWN until TWRP boots.Don’t boot the OS on the phone as it will overwrite the recovery

Backing UP Your Device:

Now as we are about to root our device, it is good to have a backup of your phone in the unrooted state, ie if anything goes wrong, we can revert back to the default settings.The backup you create can be easily restored using the restore tool in TWRP recovery.All you need to do is enter TWRP recovery, select the Backup option from the TWRP home screen, check the system/data/boot boxes, and swipe backup. The process will take a few minutes.

How to Root OnePlus X:

  1. Download SuperSu and place it at the root of your device.
  2. Reboot to the recovery of your device. Power off your device then press POWER + VOL down.
  3. Press Install and then browse to the SuperSu file. Select the file and then Swipe to Install.
  4. Once completed, select wipe dalvik and cache and then select reboot system.

If you have done all the steps correctly to root OnePlus X with a custom Recovery.To check the root status you may install any root checking app from the play store.
