Being an Advanced Android user, I am sure you’ll want to get more features and root access on this phone as the developers has started work on the development of Moto X Play with the TWRP recovery and root access because there are not many custom ROMS available for Moto X Play but you’ll be happy to know that CyanogenMod 12.1 based custom ROM has been released by the XDA Developers for this device.
Remember that this an unofficial CM12.1 custom ROM which is not officially released by Motorola, so you might face some bugs or not functioning features but most things are working. The developers are working hard to fix these issues and developed some builds for this unofficial CyanogenMod 12.1 ROM that brings many improvements, stability and bug fixes. In this guide, you’ll be required to have a custom recovery like CWM or TWRP in order to flash CM 12.1 ROM and Google Apps package .zip files on Moto X Play. Now go ahead and proceed to the installation guide to install CyanogenMod 12.1 ROM on Moto X Play.

Pre-Requirements:
- This tutorial will wipe out all your data, so take a proper backup of all your existing phone data and settings.
- The latest custom recovery like ClockworkMod recovery should be already installed on the Moto X Play.
- Download and install USB Drivers Moto X Play on the PC.
- Verify that the battery level of your Moto X Play is at least about 80% before proceeding to the installation guide.

- Download Unofficial CyanogenMod 12.1 for Moto X Play
- Download Google Apps
Steps to Flash CyanogenMod 12.1 ROM on Moto X Play
1:- First, download the CyanogenMod 12.1 custom ROM (cm-12.1-20151001-UNOFFICIAL-lux.zip) and Google Apps package from the above given links on the desktop of your PC.
2:- Copy/Paste both of the .zip files into internal storage of your device.
3:- Turn Off the Moto X Play to boot into TWRP recovery.
4:- Turn the phone On while pressing and holding Volume Down + Power buttons altogether.
5:- While the Moto X Play is in recovery mode, take a nandroid backup.
6:- Go back to the main menu of TWRP recovery, tap the Wipe button and select Advanced Wipe.
7:- Now choose Dalvik Cache, System, Data, and Cache. Swipe to confirm.
8:- In the TWRP main menu tap on Install and locate the CM12.1 custom ROM file and select it.
9:- Begin the installation process by swiping the confirmation button.
10:- Once the ROM is installed successfully, repeat the above steps to install Google Apps package on your Moto X Play.
10:- After flashing CM12.1 ROM and Gapps on the phone, reboot to system.
Done! You’ve successfully update Moto X Play to CyanogenMod 12.1 custom ROM featuring Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.
