In this guide, we will be talking about the new Google Home app. Last month, Google introduced the revamped Google Home app. We saw a completely new interface designed to offer users more options to customize their home screen to control their smart devices. Some highlighted features include the five-tab layout and the favorites tab.
The reworked version is meant to be rolled out next year to users, but you can try it out early if you want to, by signing up for the Public Preview program.
Public Preview for the Google Home App
According to an update on the Google Nest Community, the Public Preview program for the new Google Home app is now live. Users who want an early experience of the revamped Google Home app can sign up for the Public Preview program.
In order to do so, users will need to head over to the app settings and select the new Public Preview option. On the following page, select the Request Invite button to become a part of the program. If you change your mind later, you can revert to the current layout through the Revoke invite request option provided on the same page.

Once Google accepts your application, you will be able to see a notification from the Google Home app, telling you that the app will soon update to the Public Preview version. An update on the Google Next Community blog mentions the new features that will be part of the new version of the Google Home app:

- Favorites: Add devices and actions to this tab for quick access to the most important things in your home. This includes the ability to favorite your compatible cameras so you can view your live streams as soon as you launch the app. At the top of the tab, you will see a new Spaces view that helps you quickly view and control groups of similar devices such as compatible lights, cameras, and thermostats.
- Devices: Easily find all of your compatible devices and check their status.
- Automations: Create and manage all your Household and Personal Routines in one place. With new starters, conditions and actions, you can now easily build and customize home automations that can make your home safer, your life easier, and your day more fun.
- Activity: Review what happened in and around your home.
- Settings: Find and manage settings for all of your devices, services and home members.
- Refreshed camera and timeline views:
- Vertical video history timeline: Quickly scrub through hours of video history or jump to live view.
- Event views: Access a list of events and scrub to an exact moment. You can also see video in landscape mode on your phone or tablet.
- Quickly view live video on the home screen: See video from your Nest Cams and Doorbells all in one convenient place.
- Media mini player: See what’s playing in your home with quick access to controls so you can adjust the volume or access the remote.

As the application is still under development, there are some issues with it. Some of these known issues are highlighted on a support page for the Google Home app Public Preview program. Also, the revamped Google Home app does not support older devices at the moment.
